| TO: | Deans, Directors, and Department Chairpersons and Secretaries (for distribution to all Faculty) |
| FROM: | William J. Vance, Assistant Dean |
| SUBJECT: | Fiscal Year 1998-1999 Fringe Benefit Rates |
The following fringe benefit rates will become effective July 1, 1998 for the Doctoral Cluster Institutions (UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee) and UW-Extension, and will be used when charging the employer's contribution to fringe benefits on all new and on-going extramural projects.
| Regular Faculty and Academic Staff | 32.50% |
| Regular Classified | 42.00% |
| Research Associates, Project, Program and Teaching Assistants, and Grad Interns | 15.500% |
| Research Assistants, Pre-Doc Fellows and/or Trainees | 9.00% |
| Post-Doc Fellows and/or Trainees | 8.90% |
| Limited Term Employes (LTE's) | 16.00% |
| Ad Hoc Program Specialists, Undergraduate Assistants and Undergraduate Interns | 7.65% |
| Student Hourly Employes | 3.00% |
The above rates include the University's contribution to retirement, health and life insurance, social security, unemployment and worker's compensation insurance, and income continuation insurance. The rates for Research Assistants and Pre-Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Fellows and/or Trainees represent the University's contribution to health insurance only. Details are in the Components of the 1998-99 Fringe Benefits Rates table.
The Regular Faculty and Academic Staff rate increase is due to adjustments in prior year recoveries and improved retirement benefits. The increase in rates for Graduate Students is due primarily to the reduction in pay rates as a result of the new resident remission policy.
We appreciate your assistance in assuring that all projects with an anticipated beginning date of July 1, 1998, or later, include the above rates. Dean's and Departmental offices should update their copy of the "Extramural Support Guidelines" by inserting a copy of this memo into Appendix 17.
